DEAr DP,

Happy New Year and welcome to volume 1 of the Letter from the Pink Palace! My name is Abhiram Juvvadi and I am the President on the 141st Board of The Daily Pennsylvanian. Previously, I was the Photo Editor on the 140th Board and News Photo Editor on the 139. I’m super excited to get to know you better over the course of the year.

During this past week, we held bootcamp training for board, organized a DP Alumni/Board mentorship conference and hosted our annual banquet at the Inn at Penn. Tons of collaboration and planning went into making these events a success, and I would like to thank the student leaders, DP alumni (big shoutout to Peter Canellos) and the professional staff for supporting us. And I would be remiss without thanking Molly Cohen, my predecessor, and the entire 140th board for their encouragement and willingness to help during this transition period.

Below is a slideshow of media of the DP’s adventures over the past week (and all of the Photo Booth pictures from banquet can be viewed here). Big thank you to Jackson Ford, who graciously took photos at banquet — I’ll be sharing some more selects week.

Now, without further ado, here is my first rendition of the Letter from the Pink Palace:

Staffers of the week

DP Metro Beat Isaac Pollock and Deputy copy editor prashant bhattarai

Isaac wrote a great article on the Penn Saxbys set to close in May of this year, due to an expansion by Penn Dental Medicine (read it!). Prashant fearlessly led his first copy shift this past Wednesday — our first production night of the year!

The DP released its first print issue of 2025 this past Thursday. This work wouldn’t have been possible without Emily Scolnick, the DP’s Editor-in-Chief, bringing together news, multimedia, design, sports, opinion, puzzles, and copy to produce this product.

The design team, spearheaded by Makayla Wu and Insia Haque, worked tirelessly into the night to produce such a fantastic A1 design and several amazing sports photo designs (shoutout to T Fong, Dana Bahng, and Weining Ding). Go take a look at them!

I couldn’t have been more proud of the work that we put together for this first issue and cannot wait to see what 2025 brings from such a talented team.

Coming Up this next week…

The DP will begin its recruitment efforts for Spring 2025 this next week. Our Strategy & Promotions + Social Media began marketing our information sessions and open house, all of which will be held this upcoming week. We aim to have applications due on Jan. 31, and new staffers coming in the week after. If anyone is interested in joining the DP, please share the information on the flyer with them!

Marking the end of week 1 — cheers to the 141!

See you next week!
